Last week, we returned to Norwich University of the Arts for the 4th annual Brandland Conference, bringing together creative minds and brand leaders from Norfolk and beyond. As ever, the event was a chance to explore branding from the inside out—with honest conversations, practical insights, and a bit of sunshine to top it off.

Starting Strong (and Well Fed)

We kicked off the day with a delicious lunch provided by local caterer Expresso. Despite the heat, guests gathered under the summer sun and tucked into fresh, local flavours. This sett the stage for a full day of conversation and connection.

Iconic Identities with Paula Withell

The speaker sessions opened with Paula Withell (Tesco, National Lottery, Virgin Atlantic) in conversation with Robert Jones. Paula shared stories of brand-defining moments—like choc ices on Virgin flights—and urged us to insist on change, reminding us that courage comes from being truly connected to the customer.

Creating an Identity with Luke Taylor, United Us

Luke Taylor of UnitedUs and Goat Shed brought insight into how branding works best when verbal and visual elements work in harmony. With a nod to Goat Shed as the "Goatest of All Time", Luke showcased how a single, cohesive identity can stretch across all platforms without losing its authenticity.

Personal Identity with Ross Olivey, Lauren Spearman and Sophie Crowe

A standout panel discussion led by Hayley Edwards featured Sophie Crowe, Ross Olivey, and Laura Spearman, diving into the blurred lines between personal and professional identity. From the ethics of AI ghostwriters to the challenges of showing vulnerability at work, one moment stood out: Sophie’s reminder that "if we monetise vulnerability, it becomes transactional." The panel stressed the importance of leading by example and supporting teams in finding their own balance.

Identifying with Jo Juber, Poppy’s

Jo Jube from Poppy’s shared how their brand evolved boldly, even as their messaging had to anchor the change in familiarity. It was a timely reminder that innovation and consistency aren’t opposites—they’re allies.

European Identity with Anika Ramani, NOT Wieden + Kennedy

Anika Ramani, currently working on Eurovision, closed out the speaker series with reflections on agency culture, pointing out how traditional agency models still reflect the names—and power—of those at the top. Her talk sparked thoughtful conversations on the future of creative work and representation in the industry.

We ended the day with a drinks reception, giving everyone the chance to reflect on the ideas shared and build new connections. For those who weren’t ready for the day to end, we then headed to the Weavers Arms for a much-needed after party, soaking in the sun and the lessons learnt.

Brandland want to say a huge thank you to all who came, contributed, and made this year’s event such a success.

Can’t wait to see you again next year!
